Awana is an incredible place to get plugged in and love kids! Every week the program is well defined or organized. All you have to do is show up ready to listen to kids recite scripture, encourage them, and cheer them on during games. Incredible relationships are formed each week as you spend time with these kids! There are several different areas you can be a part of. They range from a full evening commitment to only 30 minutes every Wednesday evening. Please read through the descriptions below to learn more!
Listeners play an important role during the handbook time. They have the opportunity to listen to the children recite their memory verse, ask why the verse is important to them, and encourage them to continue hiding God's Word in their hearts. Strong relationships are built during this time, therefore it is very important that we keep the listener to child ratio as low as possible.
If you are not able to commit to an entire Wednesday evening but would still like to help, the listener role is the position for you. You can be involved for a 30 minute handbook session or both 30 minute handbook sessions.
The first handbook session begins at 7:10pm and is for the 3rd & 4th Grade Truth & Training Club. The second session, beginning at 7:35pm, is for the Kindergarten - 2nd Grade Sparks Club.
We would love it if you were able to help during both sessions but understand that you may not have the time or desire to work with both age groups. Please choose which fits best for schedule and interest.
Leaders are committed to the entire Awana evening. Your responsibility could range from being the secretary, game director, or team leader. This is an incredible opportunity to love kids and build last relationships to encourage and advance their walk with Christ. If you are not aware, there are two clubs: Sparks (Kindergarten - 2nd Grade) and Truth & Training (3rd & 4th Grade). The two clubs rotated between games and handbook time and then come together for council time.
If you choose to be a leader, you would be involved with a specific club. Maybe you like the Sparks age group. You would be with them throughout the evening. You would be their line leader during game time where you would encourage during the games and help them listen during the instructions. During handbook time, you would have 2-3 kids to listen to them recite verses. Throughout council time, you would encourage the children to worship and pay attention to the lesson.
You might be more interested in helping organize and run game time. This position involves choose appropriate games from the Awana game book, teaching the kids the games, and encouraging them to do their best.
Maybe you are really organized. Every week the children come and check-in with the secretary. This person records what the children have brought (Bibles, handbooks, a friend, etc). Throughout the evening, the secretary records the children's accomplishments and tallies team points.
Regardless of who you are, Wednesday nights are a blast, and kids are planting the Word of God into their lives! Your time with be a worthwhile investment.
